1995 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port: a distinctive successor to the 1994 vintage
The much-discussed 1994 vintage was followed by another vintage from Quinta do Noval. It is precisely the comparison between these two bottles that makes Vintage Port so fascinating: the same vineyards and the same tradition, but a different growing season and, therefore, a unique evolution.
The appeal of Vintage Port lies in the combination of a brief time in the vineyard and a long aging process in the bottle. After the harvest, the wine is bottled while still relatively young; time then plays a role in determining what can be discovered in the glass. Each bottle evolves differently, depending on the storage conditions.
Regular, Vintage, and Nacional
Quinta do Noval released this regular Vintage in 1995, but did not release a separate Nacional. The estate makes independent decisions regarding both wines: the declaration of one does not automatically mean that the other will also be released. According to historical records, grapes from the Nacional plot were used in the regular Vintage in 1995; a separate Nacional was not released.
What flavors can you taste in this vintage?
Blackberries, plums, and spices can blend with soft notes of dried fruit and cocoa. The exact character depends on the condition of the bottle and how long the wine is allowed to breathe after opening. That is precisely what makes an older Vintage Port special: not every aroma is immediately apparent with the first sip.
A bottle to savor mindfully
Serve this port as a gentle way to end a meal, perhaps with aged cheese or nuts. It is best served at around 16–18 °C in a suitable port glass. An older bottle may contain sediment; stand it upright beforehand and carefully decant it into a decanter if necessary.
The Story of Quinta do Noval
Quinta do Noval is one of the Douro’s most distinctive names, with vineyards that are inextricably linked to the landscape along the river. A Vintage Port from this estate offers the opportunity to follow the character of a single vintage over many years.
