The 2011 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore DOC is one of Italy’s most prestigious red wines. Tenuta Ornellaia is considered one of the pioneers of the Super Tuscan movement and has been producing world-class wines for decades. The warm 2011 vintage produced perfectly ripe grapes and resulted in a wine with great concentration, silky-smooth tannins, and impressive aromatic richness.
The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot aged for about eighteen months in French oak barriques. This resulted in a wine with a perfect balance between ripe dark fruit, spiciness, freshness, and refinement. After more than ten years of bottle aging, the wine develops additional complexity without losing its lively structure.
The wine opens with aromas of cassis, black cherries, plums, violets, cedar, graphite, dark chocolate, tobacco, Mediterranean herbs, and delicate spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied and elegant, with velvety tannins, crisp acidity, and an exceptionally long, mineral finish.
Serve at 16–18°C and decant the wine about one and a half to two hours in advance. Delicious with grilled beef, lamb, game, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses.
The 2011 Ornellaia has an aging potential of more than thirty-five years.
