2003 Croft Vintage Port from an exceptionally warm year

The 2003 Croft Vintage Port reflects a distinctly warm harvest year in the Douro. Croft is one of the historic port houses, with a history dating back to 1588. The house is known for its rich, fruit-driven style. In this vintage, ripe dark fruits combine with a robust structure—a combination that appeals to both lovers of full-bodied port and collectors.

Generally Recognized Vintage Port Vintage

2003 is one of the widely declared Vintage Port vintages. In this vintage year, numerous port houses chose to release their best wines as Vintage Port. This widespread declaration underscores the exceptional reputation of the harvest in the Douro, while each producer maintains its own style and selection.

The Story of the 2003 Vintage

In the summer of 2003, much of Europe experienced an exceptional heat wave. In the Douro region as well, the hot weather required close attention to the ripening of the grapes. On the steep slopes, elevation, sun exposure, and soil vary from vineyard to vineyard. This gives winemakers various opportunities to combine ripe fruit with sufficient freshness.

Vintage Port is bottled after a relatively short period in cask and then continues to age in the bottle. In its youth, the wine often displays pronounced fruit and tannins. Over the years, these elements can blend more harmoniously, giving rise to more refined aromas. How a bottle from 2003 tastes today therefore also depends on how it was stored and the condition of the cork.

Aroma and taste

Expect black berries, ripe plums, and dark cherries, complemented by notes of violets, cocoa, and spice. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with tannins that provide structure. The combination of sweetness, fruit, and crisp acidity gives this Vintage Port its character. With extended bottle aging, the primary fruit notes may gradually give way to softer, more complex flavors.

Serving and Pairing

Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. If the bottle is older, stand it upright beforehand and decant it carefully to separate any sediment. Dark chocolate and blue cheese are classic pairings, but there’s plenty to discover even without food.
