Barros’ 101 Blend is a unique blend of aged, wood-aged Port reserves. The name refers to the special blend and should not be interpreted as a guarantee that the entire wine has aged for exactly 101 years. Its appeal lies in the interplay of various aged components.
The name “101 Blend” refers to its unique composition and not to a precisely defined 101-year cask aging period. That distinction is important: with this Port, it is the skill in blending old components that defines the experience. A fine example of how the tradition of Tawny Port continues to evolve.
In this style, the matured aromas take center stage: figs, dates, nuts, candied citrus, and soft caramel. Behind these, nuances of coffee, cocoa, and spices may emerge. It is above all the interplay between these different flavors that makes a carefully crafted, very old Tawny so captivating.
While a Colheita tells the story of a single harvest, this blend showcases what a cellar master can achieve with various aged reserves. The wine is meant to be enjoyed as soon as it is opened; further bottle aging is not necessary to develop its typical oak-aged character. Served slightly chilled and without distractions, it really comes into its own.
