The 2016 Vieux Château Certan ranks among the absolute best Bordeaux wines in the world. The historic estate, led by the Thienpont family, has been producing one of Pomerol’s most refined and elegant wines for generations. The exceptional 2016 vintage produced a wine of unparalleled precision, depth, and balance. The original wooden case (OWC6) significantly enhances its authenticity and collectible value.
The wine is primarily made from Merlot, blended with Cabernet Franc and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Thanks to an exceptional growing season, the 2016 vintage combines impressive concentration with refined freshness and silky-smooth tannins. It ranks among the greatest Vieux Château Certan vintages of the past decades.
The wine opens with aromas of cassis, black cherries, plums, violets, graphite, cedar, truffle, dark chocolate, and subtle spices. On the palate, it is powerful yet exceptionally refined, with velvety tannins, lively acidity, and an endless mineral finish.
Serve at 16–18°C and decant the wine about two to three hours in advance. Delicious with beef, lamb, game, pigeon, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses.
Vieux Château Certan has a notable Belgian chapter in its history: the Thienpont family, originally from Flanders, purchased the estate in 1924. In Pomerol, where there is no official classification like the 1855 one, the château became one of the great names thanks to the quality of its wines. The family’s history makes this Bordeaux especially special for Belgian wine lovers.
