Quinta de Vargellas 2015: A Distinctive Voice from the Douro
Quinta de Vargellas is one of Taylor Fladgate’s best-known vineyards. In 2015, the estate launched its own Single Quinta Vintage Port: a wine that showcases not only the vintage but, above all, the terroir of this exceptional location.
A historic vineyard
Taylor Fladgate was founded in 1692. Quinta de Vargellas, located in the upper reaches of the Douro River, is one of the port house’s historic estates. Its steep slopes and riverside location make it a well-known name in the world of port. The vineyard supplies grapes for Taylor Fladgate’s classic Vintage Ports, but its wines may also be bottled under its own name.
The Story of the Vintage
2015 was a year of exceptional quality in the Douro. Taylor Fladgate chose not to declare a general Vintage Port under its house label, but did release a Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port. This gave the harvest from this individual vineyard its own spotlight. The result combines ripe dark fruit with the freshness and structure that allow for long-term aging in the bottle.
Aromas and Development
Cassis, black cherry, violets, and delicate herbs can define the bouquet. The tannins provide structure, while notes of dried fruit and spices may develop over the years. The wine’s ultimate development depends on how it is stored and the condition of the bottle.
Saving, Opening, and Combining
Store the port in a cool, dark place at a stable temperature. Before opening, stand the bottle upright and decant it carefully to separate any sediment. Serve slightly chilled. This Single Quinta Vintage Port pairs well with blue cheese, but is also interesting to taste on its own.
