Niepoort Charme 2015: A Refined Side of the Douro
Those who know the Douro region primarily for its full-bodied port will discover a completely different style with Niepoort Charme. Charme is a dry red wine in which elegance, freshness, and refined tannins take precedence over sheer power. The 2015 vintage demonstrates just how versatile this Portuguese wine region is.
A port house that also dares to make wine
Niepoort was founded in 1842 as a port house. Under Dirk Niepoort’s leadership, interest in dry Douro wines also grew. Charme is one of the striking examples of that quest for refinement. The goal is not to achieve as much concentration as possible, but to subtly express the character of the grapes and the vineyard.
The Story of the Vintage
2015 was a year of ripe harvests in Portugal. For Charme, the challenge is to preserve liveliness and elegance alongside that ripe fruit. This wine showcases the Douro from a less obvious angle: a region known for its intensity can also produce wines with a refined, almost understated style.
Aromas and Character
Red cherries, berries, violets, and subtle herbal notes can define the wine’s bouquet. The crisp acidity and delicate tannins give the wine a well-balanced structure. With bottle aging, earthy and herbal nuances may become more pronounced, depending on how long it is aged.
Serving and Pairing
Serve at around 15 to 17 degrees, for example with poultry, veal, or dishes featuring mushrooms. Allow the wine time to breathe in the glass and decide whether it needs to be aerated briefly. Store the bottle in a cool, dark place.
