1985 is one of the most famous classic Vintage Port vintages of the 1980s. Cálem, a historic port house in Vila Nova de Gaia, bottled this wine and then allowed it to age in the bottle for many years. Anyone who opens a bottle today will discover not only the character of the harvest but also the result of a long, quiet aging process.
In 1985, the Douro region had a harvest that was designated as Vintage Port by several major port houses. This makes the year particularly interesting for those who want to compare the styles of different producers. That same year saw the Live Aid concert, which reached millions of people worldwide. While that piece of music history was being written, this port embarked on a very different journey: from the vineyards along the Douro to a bottle destined to stand the test of time.
In a matured Vintage Port like this one, dark fruit and plums can gradually blend with dried figs, cocoa, nuts, and spicy notes. The color may evolve toward garnet red, and the tannins may feel softer. The exact tasting experience varies from bottle to bottle and depends on how it was stored.
Let the bottle stand upright beforehand so that any sediment can settle. Carefully remove the cork and, if necessary, decant gently. Serve at around 14–16°C. This Cálem pairs beautifully with a piece of dark chocolate or a aged cheese, but is also worth savoring on its own.
