1er Cru Classé (1855)

The 1er Cru Classé is the highest rank in the famous 1855 Bordeaux classification. This classification was established for the World’s Fair in Paris and was based on the wines’ reputation and market prices at the time.

Originally, there were four Premier Crus. In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild was promoted, bringing the total number of châteaux in the group to five today:

• Château Lafite Rothschild
• Château Latour
• Château Margaux
• Château Haut-Brion
• Château Mouton Rothschild

The classification applies to the château's grand vin and does not automatically apply to the second wine. It is historical in nature: the ranking does not change based on the quality of each individual vintage.
