Ten Years of Patience: The Vibrant Side of Tawny
The Quinta do Noval 10 Year Old Tawny is a wonderful introduction to the character of wood-aged port. During aging, the fruitiness of the young wine has given way to soft, nutty notes, without losing any of its freshness. It is precisely this liveliness that makes a 10-year-old Tawny so appealing: it already has a story to tell, yet remains smooth and approachable.
The story behind the blend
Quinta do Noval is located near Pinhão, in the Douro Valley, and was first mentioned as early as 1715. The winery is known for its Vintage Ports, but its Tawny-style wines also require a great deal of craftsmanship. The cellar master selects wines of various ages and blends them into a distinctive whole.
The “ten years” notation on the label does not refer to a vintage year. It refers to a blend with an average age and a flavor profile that fits this category. This is a fundamental difference from a Colheita, for which all the grapes come from the same year. A ten-year-old Tawny thus offers a different experience than a Vintage Port: the focus is not on the development in the bottle, but on the gradual change that occurs during barrel aging.
Aroma and taste
In the glass, you’ll see a warm reddish-brown color. The aroma combines dried fruit, almonds, orange peel, and a hint of caramel. The flavor is smooth and round, with a fresh undertone that invites you to take another sip. Compared to older Tawnies, the fruit often remains a bit more pronounced here.
Serving and Pairing
Serve slightly chilled, around 12–16 degrees Celsius. This Tawny pairs well with a dessert featuring nuts, almond cake, or a piece of aged cheese. It’s also enjoyable on its own. Let the glass sit for a moment and notice how the aroma changes as the port slowly warms up slightly.
