A 1997 Vintage Port has had nearly three decades to evolve. At Niepoort, that evolution is not just about softer tannins, but also about the interplay between ripe fruit, freshness, and increasingly subtle aromas.
The appeal of Vintage Port lies in the combination of a brief time in the vineyard and a long aging process in the bottle. After the harvest, the wine is bottled while still relatively young; time then plays a role in determining what can be discovered in the glass. Each bottle evolves differently, depending on the storage conditions.
Blackberries and blackcurrants can harmonize with figs, cocoa, spices, and earthy notes. The exact character depends on the condition of the bottle and the time the wine is given to breathe after opening. That is precisely what makes an older Vintage Port special: not every aroma is immediately apparent with the first sip.
This bottle deserves to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace and pairs beautifully with aged cheeses. Serve preferably at 16–18 °C in a suitable port glass. An older bottle may contain sediment; stand it upright beforehand and carefully decant it into a carafe if necessary.
Niepoort is one of the historic port houses of the Douro. The house is known for a style in which ripe fruit and concentration do not come at the expense of liveliness. The differences between vintages are, in fact, a reason to explore several bottles side by side.
