Barros 20 Years Old Tawny Port – The balance of twenty years of Tawny
A Tawny labeled “20 Years Old” is not a wine from a single vintage. Barros blends this Port from various oak-aged wines, selected to achieve a character consistent with an average age of approximately twenty years. This requires experience: the individual casks must come together to form a harmonious whole.
The Story Behind the Style
With a 20 Years Old Tawny, it’s not about a single vintage on the label. The art lies in blending wines from different vintages so that the aroma and flavor resulting from aging in wood are constantly rebalanced.
The character of the wine
Extended aging in wood gives Tawny its distinctive character. The youthful fruit gradually gives way to dried fruits, nuts, and candied citrus. In a well-made 20-year-old Tawny, there is still enough freshness to keep the rich flavors vibrant.
Barros 20 Years Old evokes notes of dried figs and apricots, walnuts, almonds, and smooth caramel. A hint of orange zest adds a fresh touch. The flavor is round and layered, with a finish in which the nutty and fruity notes linger gently.
Enjoying This Port
This Port doesn’t need to be aged in the bottle for years to develop its character: the most important work has already taken place in the wooden barrels. Slightly chilled, it’s particularly pleasant to savor at a leisurely pace. It pairs beautifully with nut cake, caramel-based desserts, or a piece of aged cheese. It also offers plenty of complexity on its own.
