2018 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Magnum: an elegant Super Tuscan
The 2018 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello IGT Magnum (1.5L) ranks among the very best in the Italian wine world. Hailing from the legendary Tenuta Tignanello estate, this iconic Super Tuscan combines the elegance of Sangiovese with the structure and complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Since its first release in 1971, Tignanello has been considered the benchmark in the Super Tuscan category and ranks among the most influential wines ever produced in Italy.
The 2018 vintage featured a relatively cool growing season, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. This resulted in a wine with impressive aromatic finesse, lively freshness, and exceptional balance. Thanks to the Magnum format, the wine also matures even more slowly, leading to added complexity and elegance. This makes this bottle particularly appealing to wine enthusiasts, collectors, and investors.
Aroma & taste
The nose opens with refined aromas of black cherries, cassis, plums, violets, graphite, tobacco, cedar, cocoa, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, the wine is rich and harmonious, with silky-smooth tannins, lively acidity, and an exceptionally long, mineral finish in which fruit, wood, and terroir blend perfectly.
Why Magnum?
A 1.5-liter Magnum provides ideal conditions for slow and steady aging. As a result, the wine retains its freshness longer and develops greater complexity. Magnum bottles are also among the most sought-after sizes among collectors and are ideal for special occasions.
Serving & foodpairing
Serve at 17–18°C and decant the wine one to two hours in advance. Excellent with Florentine bistecca, grilled beef, lamb, game dishes, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses.
The story behind the bottle
Tignanello helped transform the Italian wine world. The first vintage was released in 1971, at a time when the traditional rules of Chianti Classico left little room for innovation. Antinori chose to chart its own course: starting in 1975, the wine no longer contained white grapes, and Cabernet was given a place alongside Sangiovese. Tignanello thus became a flagship of the Super Tuscans. The warm 2018 vintage brought different conditions to Tuscany than the hot and dry 2017, making a comparison between the two magnums particularly interesting.
