2017 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Magnum: A Tuscan Wine Full of Character
The 2017 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello IGT Magnum (1.5L) ranks among the very best in the Italian wine world. Hailing from the legendary Tenuta Tignanello estate, this iconic Super Tuscan combines the elegance of Sangiovese with the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Since its first release in 1971, Tignanello has been considered one of the most influential wines ever produced in Italy and serves as the benchmark for the Super Tuscan category.
Despite the hot and dry conditions of 2017, Marchesi Antinori managed to produce a wine with impressive balance and refinement. When stored properly, the magnum format allows for a more gradual aging process. This makes this bottle particularly appealing to collectors and enthusiasts of great Tuscan wines.
Aroma & taste
The nose opens with aromas of black cherries, cassis, plums, violets, tobacco, graphite, cedar, cocoa, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is rich and harmonious, with silky-smooth tannins, lively acidity, and an exceptionally long, mineral finish in which fruit, wood, and terroir blend perfectly.
Serving & foodpairing
Serve at 17–18°C and decant the wine one to two hours in advance. Perfect with Florentine bistecca, grilled beef, lamb, game dishes, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses.
Why Magnum?
A 1.5-liter Magnum provides optimal conditions for slow and harmonious aging. As a result, the wine retains its freshness longer and develops additional complexity. Magnum bottles are also among the most sought-after sizes among collectors and are ideal for special occasions.
The story behind the bottle
Tignanello first appeared with the 1971 vintage. Antinori went against the conventions of the time by developing the wine outside the traditional Chianti Classico regulations. Starting in 1975, white grapes were eliminated from the blend; Sangiovese was combined with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. In doing so, Tignanello helped pave the way for the Super Tuscans. Moreover, the 2017 vintage was exceptionally hot and dry in Tuscany, making careful work in the vineyard crucial for maintaining balance.
