The Fonseca Vintage Port 2017 comes from one of the Douro’s most remarkable modern vintages. Presented in a six-liter Imperial bottle, this powerful wine makes a particularly impressive statement. The large format appeals to collectors, but it also speaks to the tradition of Vintage Port: a wine that is bottled relatively young and can then continue to evolve in the bottle for years.
Fonseca traces its roots back to 1815 and is known for its rich, fruit-forward Vintage Ports. The 2017 growing season in the Douro was hot and dry. In many places, the harvest began early, making the right picking time crucial. Ripe fruit and concentration characterize the vintage, but it is the freshness and tannins that give the best wines their balance.
An Imperial holds six liters of wine, the same amount as eight standard 75-cl bottles. Because of the different ratio of wine volume to oxygen, the aging process may differ from that of a standard bottle. However, a larger size is no guarantee of quality. Stable, cool storage and a sound cork remain essential. Anyone who opens this bottle on a special occasion is not only sharing a generous amount of port but also the story of a specific vintage.
Expect black currants, plums, dark cherries, violets, and a hint of cocoa. The flavor is concentrated and well-structured, with firm tannins and a crisp, lively quality. With further bottle aging, the aromas may become more complex and the texture may soften.
Serve at around 16–18 degrees Celsius. Because of its weight, carefully decanting it into a carafe is practical and helps separate any sediment. Serve with dark chocolate or blue cheese, or simply enjoy the port on its own.
