2017 Georges Vernay Les Terrasses de l’Empire: Condrieu
The 2017 Domaine Georges Vernay Les Terrasses de l’Empire is a prestigious dry white wine from Condrieu in the northern Rhône. The cuvée is made entirely from Viognier, sourced from small plots on the steep slopes of Condrieu. The granite-rich soils and the unique microclimate give the wine its characteristic combination of aromatic richness, finesse, and minerality.
Les Terrasses de l’Empire was created by Christine Vernay and has become one of the estate’s flagship cuvées. For the 2017 vintage, the grapes were harvested by hand. The wine aged for about eight months in wooden barrels and barriques.
Aroma & taste
Expressive aromas of white peach, apricot, citrus blossom, and almond are combined with floral and subtly spicy notes. On the palate, the wine is rich and round, yet refined and fresh, with a lovely mineral edge and a long finish.
Serving & foodpairing
Serve at around 10–12°C. Excellent with scallops, lobster, langoustines, refined fish dishes, poultry, and creamy cheeses. Dishes with a light Asian spice also pair beautifully with the aromatic Viognier.
The story behind the bottle
The Vernay family played an important role in the preservation and revival of Condrieu and Viognier. Georges Vernay was committed to replanting Viognier when the grape variety and the appellation had declined significantly. Later, his daughter Christine Vernay took over management of the estate.
