The 2005 harvest, shaped by time
A Colheita tells the story of a single year, but only truly comes into its own in the years that follow. For this Quinta do Noval, that story began with the 2005 grape harvest. Instead of being bottled immediately, the port was given time to develop in wooden barrels. This gave rise to a style in which the original fruitiness gives way to notes of nuts, dried fruit, and subtle spiciness.
The Story Behind Quinta do Noval
Quinta do Noval is located near Pinhão, in the heart of the Douro. The estate was first mentioned as early as 1715 and is known for its exceptional vineyards and famous Vintage Ports. However, the estate’s oak-aged wines are also well worth trying. With a Colheita, the focus is not on the intensity of young tannins, but on the way the cellar master guides the wine’s development in the barrel.
The word “Colheita” literally means “harvest.” The year “2005” therefore refers to the year in which the grapes were picked. The bottling date can be much later. This is an important difference from a Vintage Port, which, after a short period in oak, continues to age primarily in the bottle. As a result, two Colheita bottlings from the same harvest year may have different aging histories.
Aroma and taste
In the glass, you’ll find warm amber hues and aromas of dried apricot, figs, toasted nuts, and a hint of orange zest. The long aging in wood gives it a smooth texture, while fresh acidity keeps the whole experience lively. It is precisely this contrast that makes a Colheita appealing to those who enjoy a leisurely tasting.
Serving and Pairing
Serve slightly chilled, around 12–16 degrees Celsius. This port pairs well with nut cake, crème brûlée, or aged cheese. Try it on its own as well: after a few minutes in the glass, new aromas often emerge.
