Niepoort Garrafeira 1987 is a port with an unusual history. The wine combines initial aging in wood with a long period in large glass vessels. This unique method gives Garrafeira a place of its own among the classic port styles.
Niepoort was founded in 1842 and is a historic name in the Douro. The house has preserved the “Garrafeira” tradition, in which port is transferred to glass demijohns after a period in wood. The wine continues to develop in the glass before it is finally bottled. It is a maturation method rarely found at other port houses.
1987 is not considered one of the generally recognized classic Vintage Port vintages. That is precisely why this Garrafeira is so interesting: it shows that Niepoort was able to select exceptional wines even outside the most famous Vintage years. The 1987 vintage developed its own character through a combination of aging in wood and in bottle. Today, every well-preserved bottle tells a story spanning nearly four decades.
Notes of dried fig, plum, orange peel, and nutty undertones may emerge in the glass. The long aging process can lend it a layered character, but the exact impression depends on the condition of the bottle. For older port, the fill level, cork, and storage history are important.
Store the bottle in a cool, dark place. Stand it upright beforehand and, if necessary, decant it gently to separate any sediment. Serve slightly chilled, for example with nuts or fine cheeses. This Garrafeira is also a delight to discover on its own.
