Fonseca Ruby Port demonstrates just how appealing a young, fruit-forward Port can be. Instead of the nutty and aged notes found in Tawny, this wine is all about juicy red and dark fruit. That makes this wine an accessible introduction to a completely different side of Port.
Fonseca is one of the historic names in the world of Port. With this Ruby, the house showcases the youthful, fruity side of the Douro. Whereas an aged Tawny is all about barrel aging and nutty aromas, here the focus is on the pleasure of ripe fruit and immediate drinkability. A great glass for comparing different styles of Port side by side.
Ruby Port is made to preserve its youthful, fruity character. Exposure to oxygen during aging is kept to a minimum, allowing aromas of cherries, black currants, and plums to remain prominent. A subtle spiciness and a hint of chocolate may complement the bouquet. The flavor is round and smooth, with enough freshness to balance the sweet fruit.
This Port is meant to be enjoyed young. Slightly chilled, it’s pleasant after a meal, but it also pairs well with chocolate, desserts featuring red fruits, and various cheeses.
