1972 Blandy’s Vintage Malmsey Madeira with rich, aged aromas
The 1972 Blandy’s Vintage Malmsey Madeira is a unique fortified wine from the Portuguese island of Madeira. Malmsey, made from the Malvasia grape, is the richest and sweetest traditional Madeira style. What makes this wine so captivating is the interplay between pronounced sweetness, fresh acidity, and aromas developed through long aging.
The Story of the Class of 1972
Blandy’s is a historic Madeira house that has been part of the island’s winemaking tradition since 1811. The vineyards are located on steep slopes in an Atlantic climate. Unlike Vintage Port, a classic Vintage Madeira develops its character during a long period of oxidative aging in casks. Heat and oxygen play an important role in this process. As a result, the wine develops notes of nuts, caramel, and dried fruit, while the acidity ensures it remains lively.
The year 1972 refers to the vintage year of the grapes. A Vintage Madeira, also known as Frasqueira, must age for years in wooden barrels before being bottled. This fundamentally distinguishes this wine from Vintage Port, which is bottled relatively young so it can continue to age in the bottle. Madeira is also known for its remarkable stability after opening. Nevertheless, it’s wise to store it carefully, especially an older bottle with a long history.
Aroma and taste
Expect notes of orange peel, figs, caramel, walnuts, coffee, and warm spices. The flavor is rich and sweet, yet balanced by its characteristic fresh acidity. This keeps the wine lively and creates a long, layered finish.
Serving and Pairing
Serve slightly chilled, around 14 to 16 degrees Celsius. This Malmsey pairs well with nut-based desserts, caramelized dishes, or blue cheese. It also showcases its distinctive aged character when served on its own.
