Late Bottled Vintage Port (LBV)

Late Bottled Vintage Port, commonly abbreviated as LBV, is a special style of port made from grapes from a single vintage. Like Vintage Port this wine comes from a specific year, but it ages longer in barrel before bottling.

A powerful port from one vintage

LBV Port is usually aged for four to six years in wooden barrels. Because of this longer barrel aging, the wine develops a great deal of complexity before it reaches bottle. As a result, Late Bottled Vintage Port is often immediately drinkable when released.

In the glass, you often recognize aromas of ripe berries, plums, chocolate and subtle spicy notes. The result is a port that combines power and elegance.

Filtered and unfiltered LBV

There are two styles of Late Bottled Vintage Port.

Filtered LBV

  • directly drinkable
  • no sediment
  • usually no decanting required

Unfiltered LBV (Traditional LBV).

  • more structure and complexity
  • can further mature in bottle
  • best to decant before serving
