2005 Niepoort Vintage Port – Twenty years of aging in a single bottle
A 2005 Vintage Port has now been aging for about two decades. For Niepoort, this means a wine that has long since passed its early youth, but in which dark fruit can still play an important role. It is precisely this transition to a more mature style that makes this vintage interesting.
The Story of the Vintage
Not every vintage is rated as highly. The Niepoort 2005 is interesting because it shows how an individual producer makes its own choices and how a bottle from outside the best-known classic vintages can still tell a fascinating story of aging.
The character of the wine
Vintage Port undergoes only a brief period of barrel aging and is then bottled to continue developing slowly. As a result, the effects of time are different than with Tawny Port. The fruit flavors change gradually, the tannins may soften, and new aromas emerge without the wine immediately losing its original structure.
Blackberries, blackcurrants, and plums can be complemented by notes of violets, cocoa, and delicate spices. With a little aeration, dried fruit and subtle tobacco notes may also emerge. On the palate, the combination of freshness and ripe tannins creates balance, while the finish lingers with fruity and spicy notes.
Enjoying This Port
If you’re opening this wine now, it’s best to be mindful of any sediment. Let the bottle stand upright beforehand and decant it gently. Then pour it into a glass that allows the aroma to fully develop. This Port can be enjoyed on its own or paired with a piece of aged cheese.
