Premier Cru Classé is one of the three levels in the historic 1855 classification of Sauternes and Barsac. This rank is below Premier Cru Supérieur—which was awarded exclusively to Château d’Yquem—and above Deuxième Cru.
WHAT DOES "PREMIER CRU" MEAN?
The classification was established for the World’s Fair in Paris and reflected the reputation and market prices of the wines at that time. Château Rieussec is one of the châteaux that was awarded Premier Cru status.
