The Médoc is located northwest of the city of Bordeaux along the Gironde River. The region has gravelly soils in which Cabernet Sauvignon thrives particularly well. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot are often used as complementary grape varieties.
A typical red Médoc offers aromas of blackcurrant, dark fruit, spices, and cedar. With further aging in the bottle, the tannins can soften, and more complex aromas and notes of aging can develop.
Bordeaux from the Médoc can age for many years when produced by reputable winemakers and in strong vintages. This makes older vintages appealing to enthusiasts and collectors, but also as a wine to commemorate a special birth year, wedding year, or anniversary.
